Noctua 24V industrialPPC Fan Review. Today we explore a product that either makes perfect sense and appeals to your needs, or has you scratching your head genuinely thinking to wait, what, huh. The Industrial range hit the market a little while back, aside from new features perhaps the real appeal was the new black color scheme.

The first of its kind to break the mould and move away from the trademark beige and brown. The models we have today continue and build upon that, with a slight twist. They are designed to work in a 24V environment, which may cause confusion as a typical PSU only delivers 12v as a maximum right?

In other environments, away from the home this isn’t a problem, and perhaps that is where this product will shine. Does this mean you can’t use them at home, in your PC them? Actually, you can work around the limit with a specific fan controller for example. Anyhow, let’s take a look at performance and go from there.

Conceived for industrial heavy duty applications that require enhanced cooling performance and advanced ingress protection, the NF-A14 industrialPPC (Protected Performance Cooling) is a ruggedised high-speed version of the award-winning retail model. The 24V variant uses a dedicated wide input range version of Noctua’s NE-FD2 motor driver IC in order to support 24V-based industrial applications. Thanks to the outstanding aerodynamic efficiency of the NF-A14 design and the use of a novel three-phase motor, the industrialPPC version provides superior airflow and pressure capacity while keeping noise levels and power consumption moderate as against comparable high-speed fans. While its fibre-glass reinforced polyamide construction and certified water and dust protection make the NF-A14 industrialPPC suitable for operation in challenging environments, the renowned SSO2 bearing technology guarantees an MTBF of over 150.000hrs. Closer Look

The products all arrived in the same style packaging. Noctua made the debut of the new boxes a few years back, at the core sits still the same less is more approach. A mostly black package, with small brown accents, much like the actual products. I don’t want to talk about specific elements or features today. Please head over to the Noctua website for that info, instead, I just want to demo the difference between these and the original models they are based up on.

 

Noctua 120mm Fans

At first glance, they appear to be able to deliver near crazy statistics, and they can but… that’s at 24V. Yes, the airflow is much better but this moves away from the Key appeal of Noctua products, and sadly yes this means they are louder too. If you want something extreme then this is for you, the noise balance to performance is still very, very good compared to similar products.

Now here’s the dealbreaker unless you’re using a specific fan controller able to deliver the 24V’s they need, you can essentially half the above figures, as you’ll only be able to deliver 12v’s to them.

Feeling Confused? Well, take the 2000RPM model for example, if you only deliver half the power (12v instead of 24v) then it’s only going to hit a peak of 1000RPM right? That indeed means,  noise levels drop, as will the airflow.  In short the 2000RPM edition, at 12V will run slower and less able than the original NF-12, but the 3000RPM edition will run at 1500RPM exactly like the original NF-12

We’ll compare the original NF-12 and NF-A14 fans, which came bundled with previous Noctua heatsinks, and attach the new fans, taking a look at the difference between them.

[NF-12 VS NF-F12 -24V-2000/3000]

Ok, so let’s break this down, both the 2000 and 3000RPM edition are only running at 12v here, the 2000RPM edition is limited to 1000RPM. Also, our DB meter has a minimum threshold off 30DB, logically the 2000RPM model was much quieter than 30db! The 2000RPM edition even at 50% or so of its true ability, was pretty close to the original NF-12, which was included with the NH-U12S cooler

The 3000RPM model (at 50%/12V) delivered seriously impressive results, bettering the original model,  in the idle/ load segment and just slipped behind in the acoustics.

In the real world, your ears wouldn’t be able to tell the difference. The 3000RPM model seems to be best of them all,  and do remember these are PWM fans, so you can limit them further if you wished.

As above, with the 12cm versions, the new 3000RPM is the one to go for in our opinion, as it essenitally outperforms the original NF-A14 at 50% (idle).

Noctua 24V industrialPPC Fan Review – Final Thoughts TL:DR

The new lineup will cause some head scratching, and to be honest if you don’t see the point, they aren’t for you. It’s really as simple as that…perhaps that’s a touch harsh, so let’s rewind a bit. See the products intention is in the name right? Industrial would imply they aren’t for your home PC, and while that’s strictly true. Overclockers, water-coolers and extreme users will surely see the appeal of having  IP67 waterproof products. More so the users of LN2 perhaps, these fans are destined for over the top benching sessions, where moisture can be a burden.

In a more common scenario, at home these fans under the 12v setting can very much deliver the goods, we couldn’t test the 24v side of the product but it’s fair to say, most won’t be running them at 24v anyhow, so how loud they are under that environment, is irrelevant to most of us. At 12v, keep in mind the quoted RPM’s are essentially halved!

If you had your eyes on the NF-F12 or NF-A14 PWM or even the original Industrial versions, deciding what’s the best for you, may be confusing, the new 24V 2000RPM edition will run at 1000 (at 12v), which less than the original, and therefore doesn’t quite match the performance, the 3000RPM version  will perform almost identically or better in some cases.

This does raise the question why bother then? For me, it’s the ability to turn the fans up, in the future if you wanted. These are the more logical versions to go for.. if you intent to do anything extreme in the future, otherwise give them a miss and pick up the none-24V versions from the industrialPPC range instead.

The new line-up of 24V industrialPPC fans are a great addition, to Noctuas current product range. The price as always is higher than most, but once again it’s justified with a fantastic performance to noise ratio balance. Quality is much better than almost anything else on the market. Under the right environments these fans better everything else.

We can’t ignore the stellar design, inside and out and for that reason, we must award our Design award for the entire range!
