Cougar 550M Optical Gaming Mouse Review

Cougar 550M Optical Gaming Mouse Review. Today we examine the 550M mouse, until recently I only associated the Cougar brand with the likes of cases and power supplies. However, Gaming is at the heart of everything they make, so logically they’ve branched out to other areas such as mice, keyboards and gaming surfaces.

12 unique mice fill the current lineup that Cougar has (correct at time of writing) what I appreciate, more so is the amount of choice and types. They have 3 subcategories – Ergonomic, Laser sensor and ambidextrous. The 550M slots into the ergonomic category, which is essentially the most universal of them all.
Pricing on the day is review is £42. You can explore their entire COUGAR range here at OverclockersUK.

[Packaging & Bundle]

The 550M arrived in a neat and appealing package. The bulk is which is black and from the front we’re shown the two lighting zones. Incidentally, this is the metallic blue version we have, Cougar also sell the 550M in “Iron Grey” for those that want something more natural.
Specifications and features are listed on either side and around the back we’re given a complete run down of the product. highlighting the products main features such as Omron switches, anti-slip flanks, and pro gaming surface (coating).
Internal Packaging is superb, with a mass of card protection around the mouse, which is further contained in a bag. Also bundled is a fold out user manual, and a few Cougar Stickers.

We shall start our tour of the Cougar 550M from the front side, and work our way around. First impressions are great, the overall shape and presence, is a balance between ergonomic and aggressive. with the seemingly harsh edges at the front (clickers) and oversized scroll wheel.  Something I’ve not seen elsewhere is the added support on the braided cable, ensuring it’s always in front of the mouse, avoiding it slipping under and snagging (rare but does happen on most mice)
Spinning around to examine the left side of the Cougar 550M. We have a large grip section, dubbed as “Anti-Slip Flanks” these textured sections will be a dividing feature. Logically it will offer grip as it intends too, but not everyone wants something as prominent, especially after prolonged usage, More on that soon…Above we have two silver side buttons, curved to match the shape of your thumb, each programmable of course. In front of this we find the DPI indicator, which is configurable with RGB software (UIX)
The number of lights, indicate what profile is currently selected [1 LED = Profile 1] The opposite mouse in an exact mirror in shape and design, minus the buttons and LED.
Length from front to back is 170mm

Focusing now on the rear side of the 550M, the lower portion is coloured in an anodized orange, which despite my initial reservations, works well against the blue. At its widest point, the 550M is only 70mm, so it ought to suit almost everybody.
Despite being marketed as ambidextrous, the mouse does have a slow and slight curve towards the right, in my opinion making if more suitable for right-hand users. At its highest point, the 550m sits at 45mm.

COUGAR 550M REVIEW TECHICIZE (12)
Looking down from above, we can see the unique design for the scroller and centre trigger button, it’s actually pull back button, rather than the more common press down.  Primary role is as a DPI selector but is configurable.

COUGAR m550 underside
Looking at the underside of the mouse, we find the SDNS-3988 Optical gaming sensor. Something that we’ve yet to mention is the 2m cable, which is braided and on the end is a gold-plated USB connector. The braid is quite stiff

Testing

The software at the heart of these mice is UIX, Cougars all in one control hub. That allows customization for the mouse, this model can have up to 3 unique profiles at any one time.
UIX MAIN Window
The main UI is very clean and well organised, with categories on the left, and settings for each tab on the right. Incidentally, upon launching the software for the first time, it will check and apply any firmware updates that may be available. The application is very lightweight, we tracked memory usage over numerous days and the peak was just 21.MB of Ram usage.

UIX MAIN Key Assigment
After adjusting DPI and such for each profile, you wish to tweak the programmable buttons. Unlike some mice on the market, the M550 allows you to completely configure ALL buttons. you’re presented with a list of standard command functions, however….

UIX MAIN Key advanced config
As highlighted in red, the UIX software offers a plethora of extra options for each button, under the advanced tab

UIX MAIN Key macor
The Macro recorder is extremely easy to use, and self-explanatory. Once recorded, assign it to a button of your choice.

UIX MAIN Lightin
Finally UIX Offer as self-explanatory LED/Customization tab. To control the lighting on the two points (basse and current DPI mode) It’s a fairly robust solution with a mass of scope for Color choice, effects and tweaks.

[Testing and Final thoughts]

We’ll be performing all our testing on a OcUK Mega Mat XXL Elite Tactical Gaming Surface ( available here )

I will state here, what I do in every review of this nature. Speakers, headsets, mice and keyboards all fall into a grey area for reviewing. What I aim to provide is a fair and accurate overview and test of the product. Reality is though, that no benchmarking method or repeatable test exists and what I provide is nothing more than my experience with the product

We don’t have a predefined list of games for our testing. As time has passed, new releases are often thrown into the mix, but more often than not old schoolers like Unreal tournament, and CS: GO are at the centre of the testing.
I never jump into a gaming on day one of our mice reviews, as I feel it fair to allow for the transition period. We’ve all been there with say a new keyboard, you spend the entire day mashing all the wrong keys, activating lights and such. Mice have a similar and distinct transition period. Now my daily driver is the Steelseries Kinzu V2. A small, ambidextrous and no-nonsense mouse.
The M550 is the most user-friendly mouse I’ve worked with, in a long time. I tend to find the transition from my daily driver, to any new mouse, to be slow and tedious. When I saw the image of the mouse (prior to review), I had concerns that it wouldn’t be to my personal liking, I prefer comfort over features. I was very wrong, the M550 felt very natural under my hand from the get go.

I’ve been using the mouse with a mixture of games for a few weeks now and I’ve no single problem to report, you could argue that any new mouse is going to slide and glide better than something that’s seen better days (my daily driver) the difference out of the box was not exactly mind-blowing though. It did feel slightly limited. The remedy was a simple task, after upping the DPI in the software, I felt as if I had cut the chains and let the product show me it’s potential.
The long gaming sessions where a joy, with no aches or issues.  As I mentioned earlier, I’m generally not a fan of gripping pads, AKA flanks. Here on the M550, you are aware of them but they are very smooth and comfortable, they certainly do as intended and offer fantastic grip. Scrolls wheels can make a break any mouse, either tough, stiff, loud or to loose. The M550 has the balance just right, resistance is smoother and judder free, and silent!
After much thought, it has to be GOLD for the M550!
